The “8-Inch Pipe” Method for Endless Homemade Fertilizer ![]()
You may have seen that popular diagram online and wondered: “Is this legit?” or “Why use such a big pipe?”
Surprisingly, yes—it really works.
This vertical setup creates a powerful comfrey liquid feed (often called garden “black gold”) but without the awful, rancid smell you get from the traditional bucket-and-weight method. ![]()

Below is a simple, step-by-step guide to building the version you’ve seen in the photos.
THE BASIC IDEA
The Vertical Chamber
Use a section of 8-inch PVC pipe. Comfrey collapses dramatically as it decomposes, so the wider pipe lets you load a huge amount at once. As the plant matter breaks down, it compacts and slowly moves downward.
The Gravity Press
Fresh comfrey goes in at the top. As the leaves rot and shrink, gravity acts like a natural press, squeezing out the dark nutrient-rich concentrate.
The Collector
A thick, syrupy liquid drips out through the bottom and into your container.
