Tennessee Onions (Better than Onion Rings!)

  • Instructions

    1. Prepare the onion rings:
      Begin by slicing the onion into thick rings, about ½-inch thick. Separate the rings and set them aside on a plate. The thicker slices will hold up better during frying, offering more texture and flavor in each bite.
    2. Prepare the breading station:
      In one shallow bowl, place the all-purpose flour and season it with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs. Using this three-bowl setup will help ensure the coating sticks well to the onion rings during the breading process.
    3. Bread the onion rings:
      Dredge each onion ring in the flour mixture first, making sure it’s fully coated. Dip it into the beaten egg to help the breadcrumbs stick, and then coat it thoroughly with the breadcrumbs. Make sure the breadcrumbs adhere to all sides of the ring for an even, crispy coating.
    4. Fry the onion rings:
      Heat about 1-2 inches of cooking oil in a large skillet or deep fryer over medium heat (350°F/175°C is ideal for frying). To test if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of bread or breadcrumbs into the oil — if it sizzles immediately, it’s ready for frying. Carefully place the breaded onion rings into the hot oil, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Fry them for 2–3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
    5. Prepare the cheesy topping:
      While the onion rings are frying, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. Continue stirring until the cheese is fully melted and the mixture is smooth and gooey. This cheesy topping will bring extra indulgence to the crispy onions.
