Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

  1. Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, 1 cup of flour, and yeast. Add the warm water (120° to 130°F) and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Gradually stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough. The dough will be sticky, so don’t worry about that! Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 6-8 times until it comes together.
  2. Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning the dough once to grease the top. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 2 hours. During this time, the dough will rise and develop a soft, fluffy texture.
  3. Prepare the Cinnamon Filling:
While the dough is rising, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Set it aside so it’s ready to use when the dough has risen.
  4. Roll the Dough:
Punch down the dough to release the air. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into an 18×10-inch rectangle. Brush the dough with melted butter, leaving about ¼ inch from the edges. Evenly sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered dough.
  5. Shape the Rolls:
Starting from one of the long sides, roll the dough up jelly-roll style, pinching the seam to seal. Once rolled, cut the dough crosswise into 12 slices. Place the slices cut-side up in a greased 13×9-inch baking pan. Cover with a kitchen towel and let the rolls rise in a warm place until they’re almost doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Bake the Rolls:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until they are puffed up and light brown on top. Keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t overbake. Once done, remove from the oven and let them cool slightly while you prepare the icing.
  7. Make the Icing:
In a medium bowl, beat together the confectioners’ sugar, softened butter, vanilla extract, and enough milk to achieve a drizzling consistency. Start with 3 tablespoons of milk and add more if you prefer a thinner icing.
  8. Drizzle and Serve:
Drizzle the icing generously over the warm rolls. The icing will melt into the warm cinnamon rolls, creating a luscious, sweet finish. Serve while they’re still warm for the best experience!
