Classic Old-Fashioned Custard Pie

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Fit the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie dish and gently press it along the edges to ensure it sits evenly. Set the crust aside while you prepare the custard. Allowing the crust to rest in the dish helps prevent shrinking as it bakes.

Prepare the Custard Filling

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract. Continue whisking until the mixture looks smooth and slightly pale, indicating the sugar has begun to dissolve.
  2. Slowly pour in the whole milk while whisking continuously. Adding the milk gradually helps the custard blend evenly and prevents any streaks of egg from remaining. The final mixture should be silky and well combined.

Pour and Sprinkle

  1. Carefully pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie crust. If any bubbles form on the surface, gently tap the dish on the counter to release them. Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top to create the classic warm, fragrant finish that defines old-fashioned custard pie.
