Classic Butter Biscuits Recipe

  1. Preheat the Oven:
Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using). This helps to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.
  3. Cut in the Butter:
Add the cold butter cubes to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. You want the mixture to look like small pebbles, which will help create a flaky texture.
  4. Add the Milk:
Pour the cold milk into the mixture and stir gently until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in dense biscuits.
  5. Form the Dough:
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough 3-4 times until it’s smooth. Avoid overworking the dough to keep the biscuits light and tender.
  6. Shape & Cut:
Pat or roll the dough to about ¾-inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out the biscuits. Press straight down without twisting to ensure the biscuits rise properly.
  7. Bake:
Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top. The exact time may vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on them!
  8. Finish:
For extra flavor, brush the warm biscuits with melted butter just before serving. This adds a rich, buttery finish that enhances the flavor of the biscuits.
