Chocolate Sponge Cake Recipe

Directions

1️⃣ Prepare Your Pan and Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 340°F (170°C).
  2. Grease a round or square cake pan (8 or 9-inch) and line the bottom with parchment paper for easy release.

2️⃣ Mix Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk well to combine evenly.

3️⃣ Mix Wet Ingredients

  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, oil, warm milk, vanilla extract, and optional warm water until fully combined and smooth.

4️⃣ Combine Wet and Dry

  1. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring gently with a spatula or whisk until just combined. Do not overmix—stop as soon as no dry streaks remain. The batter will be smooth and slightly thin.

5️⃣ Bake

  1. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and gently tap on the counter to release air bubbles.
  2. Bake for 35–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

6️⃣ Cool and Serve

  1. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing or decorating.
