Bake the Cakes

  1. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the instructions on the box, combining the dry mix with the listed ingredients, usually eggs, oil, and water. Mix until the batter is smooth and free of dry pockets.
  2. Pour the batter into two 9-inch round pans, or into one large rectangular pan if you prefer a single-sheet version. Spread the batter evenly to ensure uniform baking.
  3. Bake according to the package directions until the cakes are fully set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool completely. This step is essential, as adding ice cream to warm cake will cause it to melt too quickly and create uneven layers.

Soften the Ice Cream

  1. Let the vanilla ice cream sit at room temperature for about 10–15 minutes until it becomes soft and spreadable but not melted or runny.
  2. Stir gently if needed to achieve a smooth, even consistency for easy spreading.
