Step 1: Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9Ɨ5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2: Prepare the Batter

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar with a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract and sour cream. Mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually mix in dry ingredients until just combined—do not overmix.
  5. Fold in diced apples and optional nuts until evenly distributed.

Step 3: Assemble the Bread

  1. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the cinnamon and sugar for the topping, then sprinkle evenly over the top of the batter.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs.
  2. If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover with foil during the final 10 minutes.
