Smash Burgers with Caramelized Onions

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Sauté the Caramelized Onions

  1. In a skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions, a pinch of salt, and sauté for 10–15 minutes until golden and soft.
  3. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and balsamic glaze, cooking for 2–3 more minutes until the onions are beautifully caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.

2️⃣ Make the Burger Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, paprika, and hot sauce (optional).
  2. Mix until smooth and creamy. Chill until ready to use.

3️⃣ Cook the Smash Burgers

  1. Preheat a griddle or large skillet to 450–500°F (medium-high heat).
  2. Form the ground beef into loose 3–4 oz balls and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Place the balls on the hot griddle and smash down with a spatula or press. Cook for 1½–2 minutes, or until crispy edges form.
  4. Flip the patties, add a slice of cheese on top, and cook for another 1 minute until melted and bubbly.

4️⃣ Toast the Buns

  1. While the burgers cook, toast the burger buns cut-side down on the griddle until golden and crispy.

5️⃣ Assemble the Burgers

  1. Place pickle slices on the bottom bun.
  2. Top with the cooked burger patty, followed by a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.
  3. Spread the burger sauce on the top bun and place it on top of the burger.
