Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Donut Dough
-
-
- In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup of warm water and 1 packet of active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly. This step ensures the yeast is activated, which will make your donuts rise and become fluffy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. This will form the dry base for your donut dough.
- Add 1/2 cup of warm whole milk, 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter, 2 large eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the bowl. Stir the mixture until it starts to come together. Gradually add the yeast mixture and continue to stir until the dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5–7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. This helps develop the gluten, which gives the donuts their soft and chewy texture.
- Shape the dough into a ball, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size. During this time, the dough will rise, creating those light, fluffy donuts we love.
-
2️⃣ Shape the Donuts
-
-
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick. Using a donut cutter (or two round cutters, one large and one small for the hole), cut out your donuts. Re-roll any leftover dough to make additional donuts.
- Place the shaped donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each one. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes. This will give them a second rise and make them even fluffier.
-
3️⃣ Fry the Donuts
-
-
- While the donuts are rising, heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the donuts. If you don’t have a thermometer, drop a small piece of dough into the oil. If it sizzles and floats to the surface, the oil is ready.
- Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, being sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry the donuts for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. You can use a slotted spoon to flip them gently. The donuts should rise and float to the surface as they cook.
- Once fried, remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack to drain and cool slightly. This allows any excess oil to drip off, keeping your donuts light and crispy on the outside.
-
4️⃣ Make the Chocolate Glaze
-
-
- In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of dark chocolate over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt. Add 1/4 cup of milk slowly, mixing until the glaze is smooth and glossy. If it’s too thick, add a little more milk to reach your desired consistency.
- Once the glaze is ready, stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for added flavor. This will give the glaze a deep, rich taste that pairs perfectly with the chocolate donuts.
-
5️⃣ Glaze the Donuts
-
-
- Dip each donut into the warm chocolate glaze, covering the top completely. Let the excess glaze drip off before placing the donuts on a wire rack to set. The glaze will harden slightly as it cools, giving the donuts a shiny, decadent finish.
- If you prefer, you can drizzle the glaze over the donuts for a more casual look or sprinkle them with a little extra cocoa powder for added decoration.
-
✨ Serve and Enjoy
-
-
- Allow the donuts to cool for a few minutes before serving. They’re best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days. If you want to reheat them, just pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to bring back their softness.
- Pair these donuts with a hot cup of coffee or tea for the ultimate indulgence. They’re perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a sweet treat any time of day!
